Credit Card Policies

Avis generally accepted credit and debit cards include; Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club and an Avis Charge Card. However, some locations may not accept all card types.

At commencement of rental, Avis does not accept a prepaid or reloadable stored value card, a travel money card or an EFTPOS card. Avis also does not accept cards presented on phones/watches and doesn't allow contactless payment methods such as pay-wave. A physical credit or debit card must be presented at the start of rental. At the end of the rental, some Avis locations will accept a prepaid or reloadable stored value card as a final form of payment.

Please Note: Rentals paid for by a valid credit/debit card will be subject to a card transaction fee of 1.29% (including GST) at time of pick-up.

Pay Now: If the names on the credit card do not match the credit card used at Reservation, it may be deemed as a non-permissible change to your Pay Now reservation. You may be required to cancel and re-book at the current rates (including any reasonable and applicable cancellation fees).

Avis Australia may require a customer renting a vehicle to complete a Rental Qualification Form and provide additional identification as it deems necessary or appropriate or in accordance with applicable law. Please see Rental Qualification Policy.

Drivers License

The Driver must (i) hold a full, current and valid driving licence (not being a learners, provisional or restricted licence), (ii) have an International Driving Permit (IDP) or official translation (if licence is not in Roman alphabet), (iii) have held their licence for minimum 12 consecutive months immediately prior to signing the Rental Agreement.

An International Driving Permit is not a stand-alone document and this must be carried with your valid domestic driving licence for it to be valid.

Digital drivers licences (with the correct endorsements) are accepted for any Avis rental. All digital licences must be checked live at the time of rental, via the respective validation process. A screenshot or photo of the licence is not accepted.

A digital licence does not replace a physical licence and you should still carry your physical card, when travelling outside the issuing state or territory.

Fuel Policy

Should I bring the vehicle back with a full tank of fuel?
Yes.  The vehicle will normally be supplied with a full tank of fuel. You must return it to us with the same amount of fuel it had in it when you picked it up, usually a full tank, as shown on the factory-installed fuel gauge.  We recommend you fill up as close to the return location as you can on the return date, and keep the receipt to show us. If you do not return the vehicle with a full tank and you can not show us a receipt for fuel, we will charge you.

Fuel Options

I plan to travel more than 300 kilometres, and want peace of mind, do you have a fuel option for me?
Yes, with Fuel Up Front you pay for a full tank of fuel, based on the manufacturers stated fuel tank capacity for your vehicle plus our costs of refuelling the vehicle for you. Then you just return the vehicle with whatevers left in the tank (even if it is virtually empty) so long as the engine still runs.

Can I get Fuel up Front at any time?
No, if you want to take advantage of Fuel Up Front, you must ask for it during the booking process or when you pick up the vehicle.

I plan to travel less than 10 kilometres, do I still need to fill up?
Yes, often the fuel gauges stills look full so we ask you to fill up the tank near to the return location and show us a copy of the receipt.

What are my options if I do not return the vehicle full and have not bought Fuel up Front?
Pay on Return will apply if you have driven more than 5 kilometres and:

  • Do not buy Fuel Up Front
  • Do not return the vehicle with a full tank

How do I calculate the cost of Pay on Return?
You pay for fuel based on the factory-installed fuel gauge rounded down to the nearest eighth (1/8) of a tank. This is based on the manufacturers stated fuel tank capacity.

We charge a mark up of up to 20% of the fuel price, for Norway, at the end of the rental period in addition to a refuelling charge of 250 NOK. The price per litre will be stated on your rental agreement. This charge covers our cost of driving to the nearest petrol station at short notice, and potentially delaying the next customers rental.

 

Electric Vehicles

How much battery charge should I return an electric vehicle with?

 

You must return the vehicle with at least a 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up.

What am i charged if I fail to return an electric vehicle with the required 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up?

We charge a fixed amount dependent on the battery life showing on the factory-installed battery gauge. This is the Pay on Return rate. the amounts charged are set out below:

If you return the electric vehicle with 70% or more battery charge. No Cost
If you return the electric vehicle with between 11%-69% battery charge. NOK 231.71
If you return the electric vehicle with 10% or less battery charge NOK 411.06


One Way Rentals

Can I pick up the vehicle from one rental location and return it to another?
Yes, some rental locations let you collect the vehicle and any optional extras from one rental location and return them to another.

How much is the One-Way fee?
The price depends on the rental location. If you want to pick up the vehicle and return it to a different location in the same country, you can expect it to be between 200.00 NOK and 21 500.00 NOK. If you want to pick up the vehicle in one country and drop it off in another country, you can expect it to be between 3125.00 NOK and 62 500.00 NOK.  

How do I get a One-Way rental?
You can request a one-way rental when you book or you can ask for it when you get to the rental location.
If you asked for a one-way rental when you booked, the fee will be included in your rental price.

How much will it cost if I did not request a One-Way rental but return the vehicle to a different location?
You will be charged a one-way fee at the pay at location prices available on the day you return the vehicle.

International One Way is not allowed for Electric Cars. Exceptions: Sweden, Denmark and Finland.


Rental Options

The prices we give you for optional extras when you book will generally be the price you will pay. Exchange rates or other reasons beyond our control may alter prices.

Customers with disabilities

I have a disability, do you offer adapted vehicles?
No, regrettably, we do not currently offer specially adapted vehicles at this time.

I have a disability, do you offer hand controls?
No, regrettably, we do not currently offer hand controls or panoramic mirrors at this time.

Popular optional extras to rent

I have small children, do you offer child seats?
Yes, we offer baby, infant/child and boosters seats.  A baby seat is typically suitable for a child from birth to 12 months old and weighing no more than 13 kilos.  An infant seat is typically suitable for a child aged 9 months to 4 years old and weighing between 9 and 18 kilos.  A child seat is typically suitable for a child aged 4 to 11 years old and weighing between 15 and 36 kilos.  A booster seat is typically suitable for a child aged 8 to 11 years old and weighing between 20 and 45 kilos.

In some rental locations, we may arrange for a third party to fit the seat for you. But remember, it is always your responsibility to check the seat is fitted correctly before you drive away.

Please note: In Norway, all children must normally use a child car seat until they’re 135cm tall. 

How much are your child seats?
The fee for renting a seat will depend on where you’re renting, but you can expect it to cost between 150.00 NOK and 375,00 NOK a day.
 
If the seat is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost between 625.00 NOK and 2000.00 NOK on top of the hire fee.  If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

I am not familiar with the area; can I rent a GPS (satellite navigation system)?
Yes, we offer a couple of products which provide satellite navigation systems.
GPS Device - the fee for renting a GPS will depend on where you’re renting – but you can expect it to cost between 125.00 and 150.00 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you’ll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the GPS for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.

If the GPS is damaged, lost or stolen, you’ll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost between 500.00 NOK and 1250.00 NOK on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

Travel Companion Tablet - This provides a GPS service as well as other useful features you may need when travelling. The fee for hiring Travel Companion Tablet is 200 NOK a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you’ll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the device for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days. If the Travel Companion Tablet is damaged, lost or stolen, you’ll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from 2900 NOK on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

Please note: In some countries, it is against the law to use a GPS that tells you where speed cameras are. If you plan to travel outside Norway you should check to see whether you can use our GPS as it will give you speed information.

Do you offer an audio tour guide service on your GPS?
No, unfortunately we do not offer an audio tour guide service at this time.

I want to be able to access the internet anywhere I go, do you offer a solution?
Yes, we offer a couple of products which provide access to the internet.
Mobile Wi-Fi Device - This provides 500MB data per day. We provide this service on behalf of a third party, so you will need to read and agree to separate terms and conditions with them. We will give you these terms and conditions at the rental location.

How much does Mobile Wi-Fi cost?
The fee for hiring mobile Wi-Fi will depend on where you’re renting – but you can expect it to be between 125.00 NOK and 150.00 NOK a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you’ll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the Wi-Fi unit for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.

If the mobile Wi-Fi device is damaged, lost or stolen, you’ll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from 900.00 NOK to 1300.00 NOK on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

How much does the Travel Companion Tablet cost?
This provides 1GB data per day, as well as other useful features you may need when travelling. The fee for hiring Travel Companion Tablet is 200 NOK a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you’ll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the device for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.

If the Travel Companion Tablet is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from 2900 NOK on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you. If any Travel Companion Tablet accessories are damaged, lost or stolen, you’ll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from 20 to 100 NOK on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

Please note: In many countries, including the Norway, it is illegal to drive while using a handheld mobile phone, tablet or other communications device. It is your responsibility to drive safely and according to the laws of the country you are driving in.

I am intending to drive along toll roads; do you offer a device to make this quicker and easier for me?
Yes, some rental locations offer E-Toll in selected vehicles.  An E-Toll device lets you drive though tolls without needing to stop and pay.

How much is E-Toll?
The fee for the e-toll device depends on where you are renting but you can expect it to be between 40.00 NOK and 48.00 NOK a day you have it activated.  If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get cover for the duration of your rental.

If the e-toll device is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from around 350.00 NOK  to 600.00 NOK on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

Please note: this service and any toll charges you incur will be invoiced to you after the vehicle is returned to us.  You can expect to receive your invoice around 14 days after you have returned the vehicle. 

Winter equipment to rent

I am concerned about the road conditions, do you offer all-weather tyres?
Yes, if the rental location you are hiring from is in an area where it is illegal to drive without all-weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with them and the fee will be included in your rental fee or contract.

If any all-weather tyre is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement pair. You can expect this to range from around 10 000.00 NOK to 20 000.00 NOK on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.

I am going skiing, do you offer snow chains?
No, we do not offer snow chains.

I am have brought my own skis with me, do you rent ski racks?
Yes, some rental locations offer ski racks.  You can expect to pay 800.00 NOK per rental to rent a Ski Rack from us.

Ski racks can not be fitted to all our vehicles, so you may need to upgrade if you need one. This may increase the price of the vehicle and any excess you have to pay.
 
If the ski rack is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost between 2000.00 NOK and 5000.00 NOK on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.
 
Please give us at least 1 days notice if you want to hire a ski rack. If you need it at shorter notice, please call the Reservations team.

I have left my hands-free kit behind, do you rent them?
No, unfortunately we do not offer hands-free kits at this time.
I am moving items, do you rent blankets?
No, unfortunately we do not offer blankets at this time.
I am moving items, do you rent trolleys?
No, unfortunately we do not offer trolleys at this time.

Optional extras available to buy

I have left my USB charger behind, do you sell them?
No, unfortunately we do not sell USB chargers at this time.
I have left my mobile charger behind, do you sell them?
No, unfortunately we do not sell mobile chargers at this time.
I want to charge my device in the car, do you sell car chargers?
No, unfortunately we do not sell car chargers at this time.
I have left my iPhone 5 cable behind, do you sell them?
No, unfortunately we do not sell iPhone 5 cables at this time.


Fuel Policy

To ensure a seamless start to your journey, our vehicles are rented with a full tank of fuel. It would be appreciated if the vehicle was also returned with a full tank, however if this is not possible, a refuelling charge will be applicable. The option of pre-paid fuel is on offer at select locations and the exact rate of the refuelling charge will be available upon vehicle collection.

 

Electric Vehicles must be returned with at least 77% charge, or you'll incur a recharge fee.


Modifying Your Booking

  • You may change your booking (whether a Pay Now or Pay at Location booking) any time before the day you are due to pick-up the vehicle by calling reservations or managing your booking online (if available). We will send you a revised booking confirmation email confirming your new booking details. For Pay Now reservations, the additional amount to be paid will be charged at time of rental pick up.
  • For Pay Now reservations, if you return the vehicle before the original return date (early return), you will not be refunded any portion of your payment. This does not detract from your rights as a consumer under applicable consumer protection legislation, including the Australian Consumer Law.
  • Modifying or returning your vehicle to a different location, changing the dates or the rental duration, will result in the reservation being recalculated at the new daily rates and any applicable one way fees or other charges may apply.

Pre-Authorisations

At the start of your rental, a hold will be placed on your credit/debit card for the total estimated rental charges plus an additional pre-authorisation. You must use an approved payment card that is in your name and has enough funds available.

Pay later reservations

  • $0 for credit card payments 
  • $200 for debit card payments
  • $200 for all Signature Series vehicles only credit cards are accepted

Pay now reservations

  • $200 for credit card payments 
  • $200 for debit card payments

Commercial Vehicles

  • Up to $400 for credit or debit card payments. Please confirm with the pickup location

A pre-authorisation holds an amount of money in your account. Once a pre-authorisation has been held, you will not be able to use that money.

At the end of your rental, the final payment amount will be processed and if applicable, the unused portion of the pre-authorisation will be released. Depending on your bank, the money is usually released within 7-10 working days. Avis will not be held responsible for any overdraft fees.


Privacy

The collection, use, disclosure and retention of your information, including your personal information, provided to us in connection with payment for our services and products, or participation in our programs, whether directly by you or on your behalf through a payment service, is subject our Privacy Notice located on our website or in the terms and conditions of the Rental Agreement and the Privacy Act 1988.


Rates and Inclusions

The vehicle rental price is calculated based on your requested start and end dates and times, the rental location(s) and the type of vehicle you request. Unless stated otherwise, the price also includes all costs you must pay, for example, administration fees, GST, Vehicle Registration Fee (VRF) and any location surcharges.


Rental Qualification Policy

Avis Australia may require a customer renting a vehicle to complete a Rental Qualification Form and provide additional identification as it deems necessary or appropriate or in accordance with applicable law. Signature Series

When renting a vehicle from the Signature Series range specific Terms and Conditions apply.

  • Debit cards are not permitted.
  • At the start of your rental, a hold will be placed on your card for the total estimated rental charges plus an additional pre-authorisation of $200 on credit card.
  • Drivers must hold a full valid drivers licence (not being a learners or provisional licence) and be over 25 years of age.
  • Local Renters - The Local Airport Qualification Form must be completed with 2 contact telephone numbers. A second form of identification will be required for your booking. You will be required to provide proof of your current address that matches your current driver¿s licence. An example of the acceptable form of ID is a current utility or phone bill.
  • Interstate one-way rentals are not permitted on Signature Series vehicles.

Travel Restrictions

Area of Use Restrictions

Restrictions may apply if you intend to take the vehicle outside the local area in which it is being collected. Local driving conditions and restrictions vary between locations, so you must contact the pickup location prior to your rental date for further information. During the ski season, vehicles may not be taken above the snowline (unless advised otherwise). Please contact your selected location for further information.

Where You Can and Cannot Drive the Vehicle

You and any Authorised Driver must not, unless authorised in writing by Avis drive or take the Vehicle:

 

IN QUEENSLAND

  • On Highway No. 27: beyond Chillagoe in a westerly direction

  • On Highway No. 1: beyond Normanton in a southerly direction and no further north than Karumba

  • Beyond Cooktown to the north or Lakeland to the west and no further north than Cape Tribulation on the Coast Rd

  • On a coastal road north of Cape Tribulation, unless the vehicle is a 4WD vehicle

  • On the Bloomfield Track north of Cape Tribulation

IN NEW SOUTH WALES

  • Above the snow line; being Jindabyne, from the beginning of June until the end of September

IN VICTORIA

  • Above the snow line; being Bright, from the beginning of June until the end of September

IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

  • On the Kalumburu Rd, Tanami Rd, Canning Stock Route, Gunbarrel Hwy and Holland Track

  • On the Gibb River Rd, Broome-Cape Leveque Rd, Bungle Bungles, Karijini National Park and Windjana Gorge unless the vehicle is a four-wheel drive
