The Atlanta airport was named the Hartsfield Atlanta Airport in 1971 after Atlanta’s mayor William B. Hartsfield, who was the airport’s first commissioner. In 2003, the name Jackson was added to honor Maynard Jackson, the city’s first African-American Mayor. Since 2003, the official name is the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
There are two international airports in Georgia: Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The Atlanta international airport is larger and is one of the busiest airports in the world.
For car rentals, Avis offers easy pick-up at both the Savannah International Airport and Atlanta International Airport.
According to the TSA, the rule of thumb for flights is to arrive two hours before departure for domestic flights and three hours before international flights. This is generally enough time for most flights.
If you’re traveling through the Atlanta airport at peak seasons you may want to arrive even earlier. Be sure to also allow extra time if you’re dropping off your Avis car rental.
