This historic yet modern city offers something for everyone. Those in search of retail therapy should head to Königstraße – an upmarket pedestrianised shopping area home to a range of chic boutiques and high-end chains. The main public square (the Schlossplatz) is also nearby, featuring fountains and König Wilhelm Jubilee Column.
If you’re after a more traditional shopping experience, visit the Stuttgart Market Hall. This bustling hub is a feast for the senses, with traders selling everything from spices and local produce to homewares. There are a number of catered sections too, so it’s a good place to grab some lunch.
The top attraction in Stuttgart has to be the Old Palace, or Altes Schloss. It’s the city’s oldest monument, with elements of the foundation walls dating back to the 10th century.
The city also has more than its share of museums and art galleries, so it’s worth planning ahead to find out which ones interest you most. The Landesmuseum Württemberg is not to be missed, with its collections of Neolithic pottery, Celtic jewellery and other intriguing artefacts.
Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (the Stuttgart State Gallery) is also well worth a visit. Here you’ll find a wide and diverse collection of artworks focusing on paintings and sculptures from the 20th century.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly day out, a trip to Wilhelma is just the ticket. These zoological and botanical gardens have over 5,000 plants on show, and a variety of animals, including species from Australia, Africa and Asia.

Tübingen
Under an hour’s drive from Stuttgart Train Station is the charming town of Tübingen. With its old shuttered buildings, cobblestone streets and historic monuments, arriving here really feels like stepping back in time. Tübingen Castle is a must-see, while it’s easy to spend an afternoon at one of the many pavement cafes or sifting through the specialist shops.
Heidelberg
Heidelberg is one of Germany’s most iconic destinations and is around a 90-minute drive (via the A81 and A6) from Stuttgart. Heidelberg Castle is its top draw, often hailed as the most impressive fortification in Europe. The historic city centre is also delightful and highlights include the Town Hall and Old University Building.
Baden-Baden
If you’re in search of rejuvenation, travel to Baden-Baden – just over an hour from Stuttgart. Located in the foothills of the Black Forest, the spa town boasts a number of attractions. Topping the list is the Fabergé Museum, housing an extensive collection of jewellery and gems, closely followed by Stiftskirche – the pink, Romanesque church – plus the ruins of Roman baths.
