There’s nothing like the thrill of hitting the open road with family and friends. But even the most exciting journeys can grow a little dull. So here are some easy-to-play car games guaranteed to keep the shouts of “are we there yet?!” to a minimum!

I Spy

One person inside the car shares a clue about something they’ve just seen. Passengers then ask a series of questions until the correct answer is discovered. Each new round typically starts with the phrase “I spy with my little eyes…”

20 Questions

One person inside the car thinks of something (person, place, thing, animal) and the other passengers get 20 questions to figure it out. If they fail to guess the answer within 20 questions, the person wins.

Alphabet Game

Driver and passengers look for letters of the alphabet on objects outside of the vehicle. For example, someone may spot an Amazon truck (the logo stats with the letter A). Once they call it out, they earn one point. Everyone then moves to the letter B and so on. Whoever spots the most letters wins.

License Plate Game

Driver and passengers “collect” states by calling out license plates they see during the journey. Once a state’s plate is claimed by one person, the same plate/car can’t be claimed by another. Whoever spots the most state plates wins.

Counting Game

One person inside the car starts by saying “one” then someone else says “two”. The game keeps going to “20” unless two people say the same number at the same time. Note: The counting game only works well with three or more people.

Category Game

One person inside the car picks a category (movies, songs, cars, etc.). The next person then has to name something from that category with the letter “A” within 30 seconds. Once they do so, the next person then names something with the letter “B”. Whoever lasts the longest wins.
