How Do Tolls Work in New Jersey?

New Jersey tolls are collected on major highways like the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Atlantic City Expressway. Electronic collection systems are the most common, allowing drivers to pass through toll booths without stopping. Drivers without E-ZPass or Avis e-Toll services can pay for tolls using cash on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

No, you do not need cash to pay the New Jersey Turnpike toll. When driving an Avis rental car, you will be automatically charged for Avis e-Toll service if you go through an E-ZPass lane. However, you can go through a cash lane to pay the toll.


No, you cannot pay for New Jersey tolls using a credit or debit card unless you are paying with pay-by-plate online. Fortunately, you can use the Avis e-Toll service to pay for any tolls within the state for a hassle-free journey.


You can avoid paying New Jersey tolls by avoiding the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Atlantic City Expressway. However, using alternative routes may add to your travel time.
