How Do Tolls Work in Indiana?
The most prominent toll road in Indiana traces a path across the northern part of the state, from Illinois to Ohio. This gated toll road accepts a wide variety of payment options. Multiple toll bridges cross the Ohio River; these are part of an electronic RiverLink toll system.

The RiverLink bridge system, which consists of the Lewis and Clark, Lincoln, and Kennedy bridges, is fully electronic and does not accept cash payments.

Indiana East-West Toll Road (I-90)

- Speed Limit: 55-75 mph
- Along the Way: Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes, Chesterton, Michigan City
The Indiana East-West Toll Road provides access to cities like Hammond, East Chicago, Gary, Lake Straton, Portage, South Bend, Mishawaka, and Elkhart. You can visit the University of Notre Dame, several well-known Amish communities, and the nearby tourist destination, Culver. This is a great option if you’re just zipping through northern Indiana as quickly as possible. (Source)
Abraham Lincoln Bridge (I-65)

- Route: Louisville, KY, to Jeffersonville, IN
- Length: 2,100 ft (640 m)
- Speed Limit: 50 mph
Three toll bridges connect Jeffersonville, IN, and Louisville, KY. Collectively, these three bridges create the RiverLink electronic toll bridge system across the Ohio River. The Abraham Lincoln Bridge is part of northbound I-65. You’ll encounter it as you navigate from Louisville toward Indianapolis, IN. There are no manual toll booths on this road. Charges are collected by an account transponder or mailed to the recipient. Avis renters will be automatically enrolled in our e-Toll service if they have no other arrangement to pay the toll. John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge (I-65)
- Direction: Southbound
- Route: Jeffersonville, IN, to Louisville, KY
- Length: 2,498 ft (761 m)
- Speed Limit: 60 mph
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge runs parallel to the Abraham Lincoln Bridge and carries southbound I-65 traffic from Jeffersonville into the heart of Louisville, Churchill Downs, the Louisville International Airport, and Louisville Sluggers Field. It’s also the most direct route from Indianapolis to Nashville, TN. This toll bridge is part of the electronic transponder RiverLink system. All tolls are paid by account or by mail. (Source)
Lewis and Clark Bridge (I-265)
- Direction: Northwest-Southeast
- Route: Southern Indiana to Louisville, KY
- Length: 2,500 ft (762 m)
- Speed Limit: 65 mph
The Lewis and Clark Bridge is the only toll bridge that goes north and south. You’ll find yourself on this bridge if you are using I-265, which loops around the Louisville metro area for easy access to the golf courses and nature trails. This is also a navigation point to or from St. Louis, MO, Cincinnati, OH, and Lexington, KY. As part of the automated RiverLink system, there are no toll gates for cash or credit payments. (Source)
