The Phoenix airport was named “Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport” by J. Parker Van Zandt in 1928, but no one knows why he chose that name. Van Zandt was the owner of Scenic Airlines, and he bought land in Arizona to construct an airport that would serve as a base for the enterprise.
There are actually four airports in Phoenix:
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA)
Goodyear Airport (GYR)
Deer Valley Airport (DVT)
However, only Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport offer commercial flights. Goodyear and Deer Valley Airports are general-aviation reliever airports.
Sky Harbor hosts 21 different airlines. American Airlines uses Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport as a main hub, offering regular flights to over 50 destinations. Southwest also uses the Phoenix International Airport as a base and is the airport’s main carrier. Other airlines include United, Frontier, Delta, and Spirit.
