Find your perfect hire car at Turgutreis

Settled in Bodrum Peninsula on Turkey’s west coast, this beachfront town is a holiday spot popular among tourists and wealthy Turks.

A region rich in ancient history and recreational activities, it’s best discovered by car.

Collect the keys to your Avis rental from Turgutreis and start your journey.

Plan your journey from Turgutreis

The Avis pick-up point in Turgutreis is right in the heart of this lively town, located about an hour from Bodrum International Airport. Nestled on the coast, Turgutreis boasts pristine blue waters with several kilometres of sandy beaches and an array of restaurants and bars lining its shorefront.

Historically, the town was called Karatoprak but was renamed after an Ottoman admiral born here in the 15th century. Since then it has developed into a modern tourist destination, with contemporary infrastructure and an impressive port. From here you can catch ferries to nearby Greek islands, such as Kos.

Blessed with stunning beaches, the most popular activities in the region are sunbathing and swimming. The pretty beach of Günbatımı Plajı stretches along Turgutreis’ shoreline and is dotted with bright umbrellas. Set close to shops and restaurants, it’s a favourite with locals and tourists. For a slightly quieter spot, drive 20 minutes along the coast to Aspat Beach, which was once a hangout for Genoese pirates. The surrounding hills are also ideal for hiking, with ancient ruins scattered across them.

The weekly Turgutreis Market is well worth visiting to pick up fresh local produce, or souvenirs for friends and family. In the smaller shops and boutiques around town, peruse the array of clothing and artisan wares on sale.

Settled on the coast, it’s little surprise that seafood is a specialty in Turgutreis. Fresh fish features on local menus and Turkish specialties like simit and köfte are often eaten.

Beyond Turgutreis

Turgutreis is just one of many towns along the Bodrum Peninsula. The idyllic coast is dotted with beachside resorts, while further inland you’ll discover some of Turkey’s most iconic historical sites.

Bodrum

A 30-minute drive east along the D330 takes you to the port city of Bodrum – home to one of the ancient wonders of the world: the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. This huge, white vault was largely destroyed in the 15th century, but some original features remain, such as the tomb chambers and drainage system. There are a number of other ruins to see in the city too, such as a Roman amphitheatre and Bodrum Castle. Outdoor enthusiasts can go swimming, scuba diving and windsurfing here.

Torba

On the peninsula’s northern end, just a 35-minute drive up the D330, the small, quiet fishing village of Torba is a change of pace from other seaside resorts in the area. Olive groves and pine forests surround the port, while restaurants serve up the freshest fish of the day.

Milas

Drive for just over an hour up the D330 to the ancient town of Milas, boasting more than 20 archaeological sites. Roman walls, gates and tombs mix with artefacts from the Ottoman Empire. The town is also famous for its rugs and carpets, which are handmade using traditional methods.

With your Avis rental from Turgutreis, this fascinating corner of Turkey is yours to explore.
