Synesvarden

Travel along the E39 from the airport for 55 minutes and you’ll arrive in Synesvarden. The heather moorlands in the area make for a challenging, but beautiful hike, with outdoor enthusiasts from around the world coming here to explore Norway’s wild landscape. The name itself means ‘cairn with a view’, and what a view it boasts; from the Mother Norway statue there are 360-degree views of the North Sea and rugged countryside. Here, you will see wildlife including foxes, deer and birds.

Frafjord

At first glance you might not think that Frafjord has much to offer visitors, but this small village is surrounded by steep mountain slopes that fringe a spectacular fjord. At their highest point, the mountain slopes stretch 700m above the fjord, which extends for 6km. The region affords remarkable hiking opportunities, and there’s also a local spa in Frafjord where you can relax and unwind. When you depart Stavanger International Airport, Sola - Frafjord is only an hour away by car.

Once a quiet fishing port, Stavanger boomed when oil was discovered in its waters. Despite its affluence, the city has maintained its small-town charms. The place is pretty as a picture and boasts a tranquil harbour, medieval cobbled streets, and a number of historic attractions.

The Stave churches found by the city’s harbour sit beside a pleasant mismatch of houses, creating a quirky, endearing image. There are a number of high-class boutiques to be discovered here too, offering those in need of retail therapy, plenty of variety. Be sure to visit the Stavanger Cathedral, which was built in 1100.

Known for its art galleries and museums, Stavanger will appeal to culture lovers. Visit the Canning Museum to learn about the local sardine fishing industry. The Norwegian Petroleum Museum may not sound like the most interesting of attractions, but this fascinating sight delves into the ancient origins of oil, where it comes from and why it only exists in certain parts of the world. The building is also an impressive piece of architecture.

In addition, the city is home to a number of great restaurants, with seafood a common feature on the menus. Early risers have the chance to watch the day’s catch being hauled from the boats.
