The airport is located 13.5 miles southwest of the city centre and the drive takes approximately 15-20 minutes. From the airport, take the A4, then join the A10 and finally take the s112 exit towards Amsterdam. The streets of central Amsterdam can be very busy with tourists and cyclists, so it is best to keep your eyes peeled.

Drive into Amsterdam for a tour of the incredible canal system–it’s the quickest way to see the sights and soak up some local history. The Houseboat Museum on Prinsengracht gives you a taste of what life permanently afloat is like.

Back on dry land, The Van Gogh Museum is the most visited in the city and a unique tribute to the work of the Netherlands’ most famous post-impressionist painter. Anne Frank House is another of the city’s treasures and stands as a monument to the victims of World War II.

In the Netherlands, cars drive on the right and overtake on the left. Just like in many other European countries, you can expect to pay tolls on a few major roads, including the Western Scheldt Tunnel and Dordtse Kil.

Holland’s size means that you can drive from one place to the next in no time. In fact, cities such as The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht are just an hour’s drive from Amsterdam. The maximum speed limit on the motorways in Holland varies between 80 and 130 km per hour, and there are speed cameras on the roads to encourage motorists stick to the rules.

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most popular city break destinations, but beyond the city you will also find stunning countryside and a wealth of fascinating cities and attractions.

Drive off to experience the spring garden flower park Keukenhof in Lisse, 40 minutes southwest of the capital. The Tulip Fields take centre stage, naturally. The same distance north of Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans living museum is full of traditional Dutch crafts and architecture. Visit the town’s six windmills, cheese farm and clog workshop.

A day trip to Kinderdijk, an hour south, near Rotterdam, is another windmill-centric experience. There are 19 wonderfully preserved examples. Pop across to Rotterdam to explore Holland’s second largest city.

1.5 hours’ drive southeast of Amsterdam will bring you to Holland’s oldest city, Nijmegen, where you will find history-soaked streets and bustling pavement cafes. On the way you can make a pit stop at Arnhem, famously known as the location for the Battle of Arnhem during the Second World War and more recently as a fashion and design hub.

Located 6 miles northwest of Arnhem, the De Hoge Veluwe National Park has strikingly beautiful scenery. Covering an area of 13,750 acres, its diverse landscape, which includes wide grassy plains, heathlands, dense forests and even sand dunes, is home to a diverse range of wildlife including red deer, wild boars and a huge variety of bird species.

While most visitors to the Netherlands head straight to the bright lights of Amsterdam, there are many other cities worth exploring. Just 45 minutes’ drive southeast of Amsterdam will bring you to the laidback city of Utrecht with its meandering canals, cobblestone streets and picturesque facades. Fans of modern architecture should consider heading one hour southwest of Amsterdam to Rotterdam, home to Europe’s largest port and iconic architecture that includes the remarkable Cube Houses and Erasmus Bridge, among others.
