Start at the 11th century castle and its pleasant grounds in this young, vital city (the median age is lowered by the presence of two large universities). Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, connected to the city, is reputed to be England's oldest inn. Shoppers and those in the know will then make a dash to Hockley, for its boutiques and hip hangouts.

Close to the city centre, Arboretum Park was opened in 1852 and provides a quick and easy escape from Nottingham’s crowded streets and shopping centres. The grade II listed site is home to around 800 trees, an aviary, formal gardens, a bandstand (where brass band concerts take place most Sundays), and plenty of space for your blanket and picnic basket. It hosts a series of summer events, including the Mela (July 18th), a festival celebrating Asian food and culture, and Pagan Pride (August 1st).
