Exploring Perigueux and its surrounding by hire car

Whether you come for the glorious countryside, historic sites or cultural treasures, Perigueux is bursting with interesting attractions and a vibrant street scene. Located in the heart of the Dordogne in southwestern France, the town dates back to Roman times and was a thriving medieval and renaissance centre.

Much of Perigueux’s history can be seen through the remains of the amphitheatre, the 16th century Saint-Etienne church and the defensive wall that surrounds the town centre. The streets are lined with historical buildings including the 16th century buildings of Place de Navarre, the 15th century Abzac de Ladouze residence on Rue Aubergerie and the 12th century House of the Ladies of the Faith on Rue des Farges.

Make sure you don’t miss one of the city’s gastronomic highlights, the Maison du Patissier, on St Louis Square, built in the 14th century. If food is still on your mind, you can check out the daily food market on Place du Coderec.

Once you have had your fill of the treasures of Perigueux, take to the open road and explore the lush green meadows of the Vézere Valley and the prehistoric cave paintings of the Lascaux.
