Plan your journey from Cahors Train Station

Once you collect the keys to your Avis rental from Cahors Train Station, located in the west of the city, head straight to the old town, which surrounds the Romanesque-gothic cathedral. Here, cobbled streets criss-cross each other and pastel-coloured buildings surround its medieval squares.

The history of Cahors stretches back to Celtic times, and the town became well-known leading up to the middle ages. Today, it has a very Mediterranean feel and has retained much of its ancient history, giving visitors many things to see and do.

Remains of a Roman amphitheatre and baths are located in the city, and there is a vast range of medieval architecture to enjoy. The Cathédrale St-Étienne, which was sanctified in 1119, rises above the city in the old town, where half-timber houses also line many of the streets. The star of the city, however, is the 14th century Unesco-listed Pont Valentré, which spans the Lot river and was once a part of the town’s defences. Visitors can climb the narrow staircases to the top of its two towers, which afford spectacular views of the river and its surroundings. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Lot river also offers boating and kayaking activities.

Many of the local restaurants serve a variety of specialities of south-west France, including cassoulet and magret de canard (duck breast). Cahor’s morning market, which bustles with activity as local farmers sell their produce, is a great place to pick up some of the area’s specialities, including lots of cheese.

See all of this and much more with the convenience of an Avis rental car at the ready. All you have to do is drive.

Beyond Cahors Train Station

While Cahors is a quaint and charming town, its position in central south-west France allows for more discovery of this incredible corner of the world.

Toulouse

An hour-and-a-half drive south on the A62, the city of Toulouse is a stark change of pace from quiet Cahors. France’s fourth largest metropolitan area, it’s a hub of space exploration and education, with one of the nation’s largest universities located here. The Cité de l’Espace looks into the city’s space endeavours, and is a great place to visit with children. Toulouse also boasts two Unesco World Heritage Sites – Saint-Sernin Basilica and the Canal du Midi - among various pretty squares, architecture, and fountains.

Sarlat-la-Canéda

Just over an hour north on the D6 and D46, the intimate town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is extremely popular among tourists in the region. Seemingly frozen in time, the preserved medieval town is full of cafes, restaurants, and shopping opportunities. Whilst you’re here, visit the Cathédrale St-Sacerdos and the Place du Marché aux Oies - a pretty square with a life-size statue of three geese in its centre.

Rocamadour

Only an hour north on the D32 through the Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, this town hangs dramatically on a gorge overlooking the Dordogne river. The town’s former abbey and pilgrimage site have given way to tourism, with tiny streets and beautiful views over the countryside from the church above on offer.

From Cahors, south-west France is within your reach. All you need to do is pick up your Avis rental from the Cahors Train Station, and drive.
