Bornholm, a delightful Danish island in the Baltic sea, is a popular spot for those in search of lazy beach days and outdoor pursuits. There are a number of cultural attractions on offer in Ronne, its largest city, as well as some incredible natural wonders inland.

Hammershus

Drive for around 30 minutes from Bornholme Airport (via route 159) and discover one of Bornholme’s most famous attractions – Hammershus. An imposing medieval fortress, dating back to around the 12th century, it’s one of the largest castle ruins in northern Europe. The fort is the main attraction, but the stunning scenery surrounding it is certainly something worth taking time to enjoy. There’s also a small exhibition here with models of the castle and an opportunity to try on some armour.

Paradisbakkerne

Those in search of an inland escape should drive for 35 minutes via route 38 to explore Paradisbakkerne, or the Hills of Paradise. This beautiful area is popular with hikers and cyclists and there are forests, narrow valleys and streams to enjoy. There are various marked trails to follow and those interested in iron-age history might want to visit Gamleborg – an old Viking fortress.

Bornholms Middelaldercenter Open-Air Museum

To get a rare glimpse of what it was really like to live in medieval times, drive for 25 minutes from Bornholm Airport to the Bornholm Middelaldercenter. This fascinating open-area museum recreates a medieval village and fort, offering visitors the chance to dress up and take part. During the summer months demonstrations are also held here, including falconry events in July.

From Ronne Bornholm Airport, it’s just a 10-minute drive (via Sondre Ringvej) to Ronne – home to the main harbour and a number of cultural and natural attractions.

It’s a delightful place to explore. The old town, to the west of Store Torv, has a traditional Danish vibe with cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses and historic monuments.

One of the town’s most famous buildings is Nylars Rundkirke. This beautiful church has a number of unique features, including a central pillar adorned with 13th-century frescoes.

If you’d like to find out more about the history of the island, head to the Forsvarsmuseet. The museum, set within a 17th-century citadel, houses an extensive collection of military uniforms and paraphernalia as well as displays documenting the Nazi occupation of the island during World War II.

If you favour arts and crafts, spend an hour or two at Hjorths Fabrik – the ceramics museum. Here you can see craftspeople at work and also buy a souvenir of your visit in the onsite shop.

When you’ve had enough sightseeing for the day, head to Antoinette beach, just north of Ronne, which has good parking facilities and an attractive stretch of golden sand.
