Prague Castle, settled across the River Vltava, is the city’s most iconic monument. Stroll along pre-Gothic remnants and atmospheric grounds to absorb the landmark in all its splendour. It’s the largest ancient castle in the world and the compound includes churches, gardens, museums and some royal residences. Also in the city’s Castle Quarter is St. Vitus Cathedral, the country’s most important church.

Also known as Stare Mesto, Prague’s Old Town quarter is famed for its restaurant and cafe culture, markets and diverse architectural styles. The open-air Havelská Market sells Czech handicrafts, perfect for souvenir shopping. A short stroll from the market is the Old Town Square, featuring a number of facades that represent Old World Prague: the Gothic Týn Church, memorial to Jan Hus, and the elaborate Astronomical Clock. Also worth a visit are Charles Bridge, lined with statues and buskers, and the evocative Jewish Quarter.

Head to the New Town, specifically the lively Wenceslas Square, for a sense of modern day Prague. Call in at the Museum of Communism to learn about the rise and fall of the regime. Towards the end, see the eclectic sights in Petřín Hill, including public art by local artists and a replica of the Eiffel Tower.
