Once you collect your Avis car rental, take Boulevard Tsarigradsko Shosse for 15 minutes from the airport to arrive in the centre of Sofia. The skyline here is cluttered with Ottoman mosques, domed churches and Red Army monuments.
Start around Vitosha Boulevard, in the city centre, where the streets are lined with shops and cafes. Pirotska Street and the Central Market Hall are also worth exploring, as well as Graf Ignatiev Street. The city’s star attraction is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the biggest church in Bulgaria. There are many other religious and cultural structures around town as well, such as the Sveta Sofia Church – the oldest in the city – and the Royal Palace.
If it’s green space you crave, spend an afternoon relaxing in one of Sofia’s major parks to soak up the city experience. Borisova Gradina is the most popular, but don’t overlook Yuzhen and the Military Academy parks either. Accelerate away from the city to encounter Vitosha mountain – popular for skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
Be sure to sample the local Bulgarian cuisine while you’re in Sofia too. The local taverns serve up traditional dishes and shopska salad (a selection of vegetables sprinkled with Bulgarian cheese) is an absolute must.

Over the years, it has become a spiritual, educational and cultural centre for Bulgarians. The architecture and artwork at this UNESCO World Heritage Site is outstanding, so take time to explore it.
Plovdiv
Plovdiv is Bulgaria’s second-largest city and its history dates back 7,000 years, with Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Bulgarian civilisations residing on this site over the centuries. See the Old Town with its revival-period houses and explore the Ethnographic Museum and the ruins of the city’s ancient Roman amphitheatre. One of Bulgaria’s most visited cities, Plovdiv is under a two-hour drive from Sofia.
Koprivshtitsa
Just over an hour and a half from Sofia (via Route 6) is the historic town of Koprivshtitsa. Set within a mountain landscape, this 19th-century town is a colourful arrangement of over 250 types of revival architecture. In the centre square is a mausoleum, built to commemorate those who died in the 1876 April Uprising. The gorgeous home of merchant Nencho Oslekov, which is considered the city’s best example of its revival-style buildings, is also here. As you explore, be sure to try some local dishes, like stomna kebap.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is Optional (taxable)
Depending on car group rented, customer is an amount ranging between 10,000.00 EUR and 50,000.00 EUR if Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is not taken. Purchase of CDW reduces liability to an amount between 500.00 EUR and 1,500.00 EUR depending on car group rented in the event of an accident, fire, or vandalism to the Avis vehicle.
Theft Protection (TP) is Optional (taxable)
Depending on car group rented, customer is an amount ranging between 10,000.00 EUR and 50,000.00 EUR if Theft Protection (TP) is not taken. Purchase of TP reduces liability to an amount between 500.00 EUR and 1,500.00 EUR depending on car group rented for theft of parts or all of the Avis vehicle.
Note: In the case of damage to the Avis vehicle, traffic fines or pentalty fee a charge of 30.00 EUR is applied for administration costs, in addition to the libility amount.
In case of damage or theft to the rented vehicle, a police protocol or a mutual agreement statement is required. Otherwise, all additional insurances, reducing your responsibility will be invalid. In case no other vehicle/participant is involved in the accident and the police has refused to attend the scene, the customer must provide the reference number from his call with the police.
If you require additional insurance coverage you may purchase locally to reduce/remove the insurance excess. Just ask at the Avis rental desk when you collect your car.
