You will find our friendly Avis team ready to help you with your vehicle at our rental office which can be found close to arrivals on the ground floor of Car Park 4 (P4). An underground walkway links the airport terminal with the car rental location.
Vienna Airport is just a short drive from the centre of the city. The 20 km trip can take between 20min and 40min depending on the traffic conditions and time of day. You will leave the airport parking via Parkstrasse and head north west into the city along the A4 which runs parallel to the River Danube.
In its stunning setting on the banks of the River Danube, Austria’s capital city Vienna is one of the world’s bucket list destinations. Steeped in history, with its cathedral, palaces, state opera, museums, open air markets and coffee houses, this is a city that draws you in. It’s also a very liveable city both for residents and tourists with clean air, a low crime rate and good transport and road networks.
With its location in eastern Austria, close to the borders of both Hungary and the Czech Republic and scenery on its doorstep from castles to mountains and lake shores, Vienna offers the perfect base to explore central Europe. To the west of the city, you’ll find Vienna Woods a 24,000-acre region of forestry, hills, vineyards and small villages designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Take a road trip to Graz, Austria’s second city and just a 2.5hr drive. Head for pretty Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart and don’t miss the stunning and much-photographed village of Halltstatt on Lake Hallstatt. If you fancy crossing some borders, Prague, capital of the Czech Republic is just 180 miles (300km) to the north while Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is just 170 miles (280km) or a 2.5hr drive to the south east.
While there is a great public transport network in Vienna itself with trams, buses and the U-Bahn subway network, in the centre itself many of the city’s tourist sites are all within walking distance. Hiring a car gives you more freedom to travel further afield and explore areas beyond the city limits. Traffic can flow smoothly in the city but it can be slow in rush hour so pick your time to drive.
If you are driving in Austria for the first time, it’s worth familiarising yourself with the road rules before you go. If you are crossing over from Germany into Austria and are used to driving on the autobahns which have no top speed, don’t be caught out by the fact that there are speed limits on Austrian motorways. Most roads in Vienna itself have speed limits of either 30kmh or 50kmh. Be aware that when traffic is congested, a corridor free of traffic must be maintained on dual carriageways to enable emergency vehicles to pass – this temporary lane is called a Rettungsgasse. See more on the Austrian road rules you need to know.
Many hotels in the city have their own parking but in 2022 the entire Vienna metropolitan area became a short-stay parking zone with a two-hour maximum stay. You can buy parking tickets costing 1.25 Euros for 30min from locations including shops, newsagents and petrol stations.
