Salzburg is just under 4 miles (6.5km) drive from Salzburg Airport. You leave the airport parking via Christian Doppler Platz and take the B1 towards the centre. Salzburg is a compact city and easy to navigate. Depending on the time of day, the drive takes around 15min.
Our Avis rental office at Salzburg Airport WA Mozart is located on the ground floor of the car park opposite the terminal building. As you leave the terminal, our office is a short distance away via the covered walkway.
As the home of Mozart, the setting for the Sound of Music and the fourth largest city in Austria, Salzburg is the perfect destination for a city break. You can tour the historic old town, a UNESCO world heritage site on the River Salzach, with its palaces, cathedral, baroque architecture, churches, museums and shopping plus Christmas market. Explore the stunning Hohensalzburg Fortress and stop by the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself on Getreidegasse.
Saltzburg is on the border between Austria and Germany and close to the eastern Alps. Surrounded by lakes and mountains it is ideally located for some memorable day trips by car. The pretty resort of Zell am See is nearby and the Austrian Tyrol is within easy reach for hiking trips. For magical scenery you can’t beat the small village of Hallstatt on the shores of Lake Hallstatt, one of the most photographed settings in Austria. For a longer drive, check out the aptly named Austrian Romantic Route.
While the city of Salzburg itself is best explored on foot, there are other options to get you around the centre by bus and trolley bus while you can hire bicycles or even hop aboard a horse-drawn carriage. However, if you want the flexibility of exploring the scenic beauty of Salzburgerland, hiring a car is your safest bet. This gives you the chance to plan day trips close to the city and take time to cruise through the stunning countryside of this mountainous region. Drive further afield and you can enjoy the breathtaking route over the Grossglockner Pass, the highest mountain in Austria.
It’s worth checking the driving rules in Austria before you travel. In Salzburg as in the rest of Austria and mainland Europe, you will be driving on the right-hand side of the road. There are some specific driving rules in Austria to be aware of. Seat belts should be worn by all occupants of the car and the fine for not buckling up is €35. In some mountain roads there is no automatic priority and where the road narrows, both drivers should stop and one should reverse to the nearest passing place. Parking charges apply in Salzburg as with other Austrian cities but most sites operate mobile payment options. See more on the Austrian road rules you need to know.
