Plan your journey from Dubrovnik Airport

Leaving Dubrovnik Airport, drive for 25 minutes on the D8 and you’ll arrive at the impressive town of Dubrovnik. The Old Town is the main draw. Enclosed by massive stone walls completed in the 16th century and filled with everything from baroque to Renaissance architecture, it’s beyond charming.

Walk the pedestrian Stradun (or Placa) lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. Visit the baroque Church of Saint Blaise or the Renaissance Sponza Palace. There’s also the stunning Dubrovnik Cathedral, as well as the gothic Rector’s Place, which has a museum housed inside. Prepare to be dazzled by the city’s marbled streets and the sparkling Adriatic Sea just beyond. You can even walk along the top of the city walls, which should definitely top your itinerary.

For a different perspective, take the cable car to the top of Mount Srd, where you’ll be greeted with 360-degree views of the town below and the sea beyond. If you feel like soaking up the Mediterranean, you can rent a kayak and paddle just beyond the city walls, or find a place to dive in and have a swim.
Being by the sea, there are a number of fantastic beaches near the city too. Banje beach is the closet, located just beyond the city gates.

Beyond Dubrovnik Airport

From Dubrovnik, you have plenty of options for exploring – both within Croatia and in neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mostar

Nestled in the south of eastern Europe, you’ll have the opportunity to do a little country hopping from Dubrovnik. Take the M6 for two hours and you’ll arrive in Mostar, a fascinating city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The famous Old Bridge over the Neretva river is Mostar’s most iconic attraction, although the original was destroyed during the Yugoslavian War. Walk the cobbled streets of the Old Town, shopping for souvenirs and stopping for cevapi – Bosnia’s traditional dish.

Medjugorje

Medjugorje is considered one of Europe’s holiest and most peaceful destinations, also located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. To get here from Dubrovnik, take the M6 for two hours. Explore the city and head to Apparition Hill, where it’s believed the Virgin Mary once appeared. If you can, attend a service at the beautiful Church of St James.

Cavtat

Cavtat is one of Croatia’s most popular little holiday towns, located just under half an hour from Dubrovnik via the D8. This seaside village is a pleasant escape from crowded Dubrovnik and its harbour is filled with cafes and restaurants. Visit the Racic Mausoleum, or simply hang out on one of the nearby beaches all day.

Croatia is sure to charm you. Just get in your Avis rental and drive.

Dubrovnik FAQs

Aim to spend around 2-3 days in Dubrovnik to explore the old town, enjoy the beach and the major sights. Tag on a couple more days to visit the nearby islands or for a possible day trip to Montenegro or Mostar.

The best time of year to visit Dubrovnik is in autumn, in September and October, when the temperatures are still warm, there are fewer tourists and the water is still warm. Spring to early summer is also an ideal time to visit Dubrovnik, when plants blossom and temperatures offer perfect sightseeing weather.

Dubrovnik is home to a spectacular coastline and many different beaches, ranging from pebble coves to sandy beaches.

Dubrovnik is more expensive than other places in Croatia, particularly in the old town. To keep costs down you could choose accommodation outside the old town and take a short drive to the city centre.
