Find your perfect hire car at Mykonos Airport (JMK)

Book an Avis hire car and enjoy exploring the idyllic island of Mykonos at your own pace.

Despite its appeal as an elegant party island, Mykonos has another side with traditional, white-washed villages, windmills and out of the way beaches.

Mykonos is one of the Cyclades group of islands lying in the Aegean Sea south east of mainland Greece and the Greek capital, Athens.

As well as serving Mykonos island, Mykonos International Airport is the gateway to the neighbouring islands of Paros, Naxos and Syros.

Although popular in high summer, the Cyclades Islands are also a much loved destination in the shoulder months (May-June and September-October). In early Spring (February-April), as the weather warms up, walkers head to the region to enjoy perfect hiking conditions.

About Mykonos Airport

Mykonos International Airport (JMK) first opened in 1971. It became part of the Fraport Group in 2017 and has since been refurbished with an upgraded terminal building including more check-in counters and increase in the size of the departure gate and security lanes to speed up and improve the experience for passengers.

More than 1.6m visitors fly in to Mykonos each year making it the 10th largest airport in Greece. In the summer months there are flights from more than 40 European cities and 18 countries plus 4 domestic Greek destinations: Athens, Thessaloniki, Santorini and Crete.

The airport is located to the southeast of Mykonos town.

Tips for driving in Mykonos

Hiring a car is a great way to explore the island of Mykonos. We’d recommend using GPS to navigate the Greek road network. Be aware that roads can be narrow in towns and villages as well as in rural areas and road surfaces can vary in remote parts of the island. As in the rest of mainland Europe, you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road as you set off from Mykonos Airport. If you have not driven in this part of the world before, we’d advise checking the road rules for driving in Greece before you set off.

Mykonos car rental FAQs

The minimum age to rent a car in Greece is 21. Age restrictions also vary by vehicle and some selected car groups are not available to drivers under the age of 25.

To hire a car in Greece, you just need to bring your:

  • Driving licence
  • Credit cards (if it's a high value vehicle two payment cards must be provided, one of which needs to be a credit card),
  • Proof of any discount (such as a frequent flyer or Avis Preferred card),
  • Photo ID for international rentals (such as a passport or driving licence)

While a local bus service, KTEL Mykonos serves the main towns and villages in the region, you’ll find the best way to explore this magical island is by hire car. Exploring with a rental car means you can get off the beaten track and discover hidden gems. The Avis team at Mykonos Airport are experts on the island and ready to advise you on the best places to go and help make your trip a smooth one from the moment you touch down.

Parking in the town of Mykonos can be scarce in the peak summer months and the best option to aim for is the large open car park next to the port area. Elsewhere on Mykonos, in most towns and villages, parking is plentiful and hassle-free and if you’re heading to the beach, you’ll often find sheltered spaces by the roadside under the shade of an olive tree.

How to get from Mykonos Airport to Mykonos

From the Avis car park at Mykonos Airport, the town of Mykonos is just a 10min drive of 2.9km. Turn right as you leave the airport parking and head north following signs into the centre of town.

Things to do in Mykonos

While many people come to Mykonos for its stunning white sandy beaches and glamourous nightlight, there are plenty of other attractions on the island from picturesque towns and villages to historic sites and breathtaking natural beauty.

First off, wander the cool, white-washed streets of Mykonos town, exploring narrow alleyways to discover independent shops and tucked away eateries. Step inside the remarkable 500-year old Paraportiani Church. Head to the old port and soak up the waterfront atmosphere. Take a walk to see the iconic Kato Milli windmills which are among the island’s most photographed places. Finally stroll across to Little Venice to watch the sun go down.

Away from Mykonos town, its just a 6-mile drive outside town to Ano Mera village in the greenest part of the island to see the remarkable Monastery of Paleokastro which dates back to the 18th century.

Another day, head off the beaten track to discover some of the most unspoiled golden beaches on the other side of the island including Agios Sostis or Fokos Bay for a taste of the simple life.
