The French commandeered Corsica in 1768, and joie de vivre defines the prevalent culture that thrums through Ajaccio. A winter sun destination for Europe’s well-heeled traveller since the second half of the 19th century, Ajaccio has a strong history of tourism. And it’s not surprising. Laid-back bistros and sun-blanketed cafés spill out across the pavements in typical French fashion, while patisseries flood the streets with the aroma of fresh croissants. The colourful spoils of the Place Foch market draw in tides of shoppers every morning.
In terms of must-see sights, Maison Bonaparte - Napoléon’s childhood home - is your first port of call. Owned by the military leader’s family between 1682 and 1923, the grand four-storey residence has been preserved as a museum and contains intriguing memorabilia, including the diminutive stateman’s death mask. Elsewhere, the Musée des Beaux-Arts brags the largest French collection of Italian paintings outside the Louvre, including works by Titian, Bellini and Botticelli.
Genoese colonists restructured Ajaccio’s old town during the 15th century, and erected a mighty citadel and belt of defensive bastions along the shore to protect from overseas marauders. Now a scenic promenade that spools out along the city’s glittering coastline, it’s flanked by palm trees and descends to a charming beach for a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean.
Beyond Ajaccio
To really make the most of Corsica’s stunning beaches and bays, including the golden sweep of Golfu di Lava and crystal clear waters of Golfu di Liscia, hiring a car is essential.
