Plan your journey from Gare du Midi Railway Station

Hip and historic, Brussels is the cool capital of Belgium. Collect your Avis hire car from the city’s Gare du Midi Railway Station in the south and discover this diverse city the easy way.

Built on a unique tapestry of styles and historical influences, Brussels promises a surprise at every turn. The cosmopolitan city is officially bilingual, so the landmarks and sights of the capital each have a French and Flemish name.

The main square, known as the Grand Place or Grote Markt, towers with beautiful ornate buildings. For a memorable evening, head to the grand square to enjoy live music and a truly inspiring atmosphere.

During the day, the Parc du Cinquantenaire (Jubelpark) is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon. Here you can climb the Arc de Triomphe (Triomfboog) for fantastic views over the city.

Of course, Belgium is also known for its cuisine and Brussels provides the ideal sampling ground. From mouthwatering mussels to delectable Belgian chocolate, wonderfully sweet waffles to salty frites, the menu of delicious treats is endless.

Exploring Brussels with your hire car

Brussels is the gateway to many other spectacular European cities. With an Avis hire car in Brussels, you can explore them in complete comfort.

Bruges

Accelerate just over an hour north from Brussels along the E40 and you’ll arrive on the cobbled lanes of Bruges. A medieval town straight from a fairytale, Bruges is bursting with history and natural beauty. With its winding streets and tranquil canals, ancient churches and whitewashed buildings, it’s little wonder visitors flock here.

Lille

Drive 90 minutes west of Brussels along the E429 and you’ll hit Lille – the largest city in French Flanders.

Sitting right on the border with Belgium, Lille is a charming metropolis with strong Flemish roots. The city is home to an abundance of art galleries and museums including the Fine Arts Museum, which houses an impressive collection of 15th and 20th century paintings. Watch the world go by while enjoying a waffle at a cafe in the Grand Place or pay a visit to the open market of Marché de Wazemmes.

Brussels and beyond is yours to discover. Collect your hire car from Gare du Midi Railway Station and let the adventure begin.

Top tips for driving in Brussels

Driving rules in Belgium

Which side of the road?
In Belgium, please drive on the right side of the road.

Country driving laws

  • Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free device. Do not use headphones or earpiece
  • Lots of crossings are equipped with cameras; if caught jumping a red light you could be heavily fined.
  • In towns and rural areas, on minor roads and where there is no clear indication of right of way, it may be prudent to give way to traffic coming from the right (priorité à droite)

Speed limits

All speed signs will be in km/h.

For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailer:

  • Urban areas: 50 km/h (31 mph)
  • Motorways and National Roads 70 km/h - 80 km/h (43 mph - 50 mph)

Unless indicated by road signs. Be aware of changes to speed limits displayed on road signs due to adverse weather conditions.

Child safety / Seatbelt laws

  • It is compulsory for the driver and all passengers to wear a seatbelt
  • Babies up to 13 kg must travel in a car seat, facing backwards
  • Children 13 Kg to 18 kg must travel in a car seat, facing forwards
  • Children 18 Kg to 36 kg must travel in an adapted car seat using the normal seat belt
