What is CDW insurance?

CDW insurance, or a collision damage waiver, is a rental car coverage option, but it’s actually not insurance at all. A collision damage waiver reduces your financial responsibility for anything that happens to your rental car as long as you abide by the terms of your rental agreement. CDW is the same as LDW, or a Loss Damage Waiver. At Avis, and on our website, this waiver is more commonly referred to as an LDW. A rental car Loss Damage Waiver is one of several options that can be added to your rental agreement for an additional daily charge. 

 

What Protections Are Included with an LDW?

A Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) waives or limits your liability when a car you have rented is lost or damaged. You benefit from maximum protection as long as you comply with the Avis rental agreement. 

Renters who have paid for an LDW will not have to cover expenses related to the car’s damage. For example, if you get in a crash in your rental car, your Loss Damage Waiver means that Avis takes care of submitting insurance claims and paying for repairs.

If you opt for an LDW, your personal insurance policy is also not affected after an accident or other damage to your rental car. Avis won’t contact your insurance company and let them know about the crash, so you don’t have to worry about your premiums going up. 

Avis also offers other rental car protection options to ensure you have coverage for additional expenses that can come with car accidents, like medical coverage and damage to your possessions. 

How Much Does a LDW Cost?

The cost of a Loss Damage Waiver depends on several factors, including the type of car you are renting and the location you are renting from. Every time you rent a car from Avis, you will have the option to add an LDW, or other insurance coverage add-ons, to your rental agreement for an additional daily rate.

Can I Purchase a LDW When I Book a Rental Car Online?

Yes, you can add an LDW while booking your reservation online by following the steps below. 

  1. Enter your rental details (rental period, pickup and drop-off locations).

  2. Choose your car group.

  3. Select the “Protections and Coverages” tab in “Rental Options.”

  4. Choose LDW under “Cover the Car.” You will see the daily rate of an LDW here as well. 

You can also add an LDW when picking up your rental or save your car rental coverage preferences on your Avis Preferred profile. 

Can I Cancel My LDW?

No, in most states you cannot cancel a Loss Damage Waiver. It must remain on the rental agreement once it has been added. You do have the option to return the vehicle and end the rental agreement, but you may be charged a different daily rental rate for ending your rental period early. 

In New York, you can cancel LDW coverage if:

  • You are renting for at least 2 days.

  • You cancel the LDW in the first 24 hours of your rental period.

  • The primary renter returns the car to the rental location for inspection.

  • The primary renter signs a cancellation of coverage notice.

Should I Get CDW Insurance?

While a collision damage waiver or Loss Damage Waiver is not required for a car rental from Avis, keep in mind that when the vehicle is in your possession, you are financially responsible for damages. A CDW/LDW can provide extra coverage as well as peace of mind.
