Additional Liability Insurance (ALI)

No.  Minimum liability insurance coverage is included in all rates at no additional charge at all locations in Canada.

The liability limit for all locations in Quebec (as required by the province) is CAD 50,000.00 Public Liability & Property Damage coverage per accident.

All Avis cars are not to be driven on unpaved roads (like gravel, dirt, etc.)

Optional Coverages

Acceptance of the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) reduces the renters and authorized additional drivers financial responsibility to $300.00 CAD or $500.00 CAD, dependent upon the vehicle group rented, if the car is damaged or stolen while under rental contract. . Using the vehicle in violation of any of the use restrictions listed on the rental agreement could void LDW and leave the renter fully responsible for any damage to the vehicle.

If LDW is not accepted, the customer is financially responsible for the full value of:

  • Accident damage
  • Glass damage
  • Vandalism
  • Theft of the car
  • Stolen items such as radio, battery, etc.

All Avis cars are not to be driven on unpaved roads (like gravel, dirt, etc.)

Global insurance coverages are always subject to change. Please verify at time of rental.


Credit Card Policies

Avis accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental.

Accepted credit card list: Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, Diner's Club, Diner's Club Int'l, Discover, JCB, MasterCard and Visa.

Some locations may not accept each of the referenced cards.

The exact amount of Credit Card authorization will vary by the rate, car group, length of rental, and miscellaneous charges.  Please contact the rental counter for an estimate of the authorization amount.


Debit Card Policies

Debit cards are not accepted at time of rental as credit identification, however, they can be used at time of return to pay for the rental. You must have a honored charge card to qualify for rental. .


Drivers License

At the time of rental, the driver must present a valid drivers license in the drivers name.
Canada licenses required by issuing province to rent a vehicle are:  Manitoba requires Class 5 Full (F), New Brunswick requires Class 7 (level 2 only) and Class 5, Ontario requires Class G & G2 and all other provinces require Class 5.

Customers presenting a drivers license in a non-Roman alphabet must also present an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their valid drivers license.


Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and PAI-Plus are optional coverages the customer may purchase at the time of rental.

Personal Accident Insurance provides accidental death and medical expense benefits to the renter and all passengers in the Avis car.

Personal Accident Insurance Plus offers an Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit.

PAI Plus offers an Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit of CAD 100,000 per accident for the renter and all passengers in the Avis vehicle.

Coverage for paralysis is CAD 100,000 for the renter and CAD 10,000 for each passenger.

PAI Plus also includes coverage for:

  • Emergency transportation
  • Emergency accomodations
  • Road Hazard Service
  • Towing
  • Legal Defense
  • Lost keys/remote
  • Funeral Expenses

PAI Plus benefits described are payable in addition to any other insurance benefits.

There are limitations for this coverage.  For complete details & restrictions, the customer may inquire at the time of rental.

GST applies on PAI Plus in all provinces.


Public Liability and Property Damage

Public liability insurance is in accordance with the insurance laws of the country.  Customer may inquire at the time of rental for additional information of the benefits, conditions and acceptance.

Note: Some credit cards provide insurance coverage, with certain limitations, as a benefit of using the card to rent vehicles.  The customer is advised to contact the card issuer before the rental.  Any waiver must be discussed directly with the location upon arrival.


Additional Fees

Winter Tires are mandatory on certain roads or the renter/driver may be ticketed by RCMP.

QUEBEC -
It is mandatory that all vehicles registered in the province of Quebec be equipped with winter tires during the winter months of December through March. All rentals will be charged a daily Tire Management Fee up to 4.50 CAD per day for year-round tire maintenance.  The fee is subject to concession recovery fees, GST and QST.

ALL OTHER PROVINCES -
Winter tire equipped vehicles maybe available in the winter season for reservations at some locations. An additional fee up to 20.00 CAD per day will apply.  Fees vary by location and car group.


Age Requirements

A customer renting a Luxury Car, Minivan, Full-Size Pickup, Full-Size SUV, Premium SUV, Standard SUV or any vehicle in the Specialty/Signature Series/Cool Car categories must be at least 25 years old.

  • Exception: A customer with an acceptable corporate discount number can rent the above car classes at 21 years old without an underage fee.

For all other car classes, a customer presenting a major charge card must be at least 21 years old. An underage surcharge of $25.00 CAD per day will apply for renters 21-24 years old.

  • Exception: A customer presenting a major charge card with an acceptable corporate discount number can rent at 21 years old without an underage fee. .

A customer presenting an Avis charge card, government-issued Visa/MasterCard or government travel/purchase orders can rent any car class at age 21 without an underage fee.


Estimated Totals

Snow Tires are mandatory for rentals within the Province of Quebec, CA, during the Winter Season.  There will be a daily charge up to a maximum $3.99 CAD per day, applied to the rental.  Snow Tires may also be available within other locations in Canada, with a fee of $10.00 CAD per day charge.

Approximate total includes base rate, taxes, and surcharges. Items such as coupon discounts, child safety seats and gas are NOT included in the estimated total. Optional coverages and one-way fees are subject to tax in certain locations. This tax is not reflected in the Estimated Total.

Estimated total is subject to change based upon exchange rates at the time of rental.


Fuel Policy

The vehicle must be returned with a full tank of gas or there will be a charge for refueling.

Most locations offer a prepaid gas option which you can accept at the rental location.

If the vehicle is driven less than 125 kilometers there may be an additional refueling fee, unless a gas receipt is presented at time of return. The customer can check at the time of rental for complete details.


Rental Options

Roadside SafetyNet

  • Taxes not included in the Estimated Total and will be applied at the time of rental
  • Roadside SafetyNet (RSN) service is available at all participating Avis locations in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico & U.S. Virgin Islands and New Zealand.
  • The daily/weekly fee for the Avis Roadside SafetyNet Option is subject to change.
  • RSN covers the cost for assistance with key replacement, lockouts, tire change service fee, jump starts and emergency fuel delivery (up to 3 gallons).
  • Prohibited use of the vehicle will void this option.

 

Other Options

  • Rental options not selected/offered on the avis.com website can not be modified online but have been calculated in the Estimated Total.
  • Taxes not included in the Estimated Total and will be applied at the time of rental.
  • Modifications to these rental options must be made by contacting customer service or can be made at the rental counter.

Avis Mobile Notifications is a standard rated subscription alert service providing time-sensitive mobile alerts and MMS to customers that include updates to the customer's current and upcoming rentals, and information about claims or inquiries relating to past rentals. By providing your phone number you agree to receive text messages, including text messages sent by an automatic telephone dialing system ("ATDS"), from us and our service partners regarding your rental. Messaging frequency varies based on customer journey. We will not use an ATDS to send you texts for marketing purposes unless we receive your prior express written consent. You are not required to provide consent in order to purchase any of our goods or services.

Opt-out
To Opt-Out of marketing text messages text "STOP" from your mobile device in response to a marketing text message. You can also manage your preferences to receive marketing text messages by updating your Avis profile at Avis.com. Simply select "No" from the SMS Notifications option in the communication preference section of your profile.

Age Requirements

How old do I need to be to drive a rental vehicle?

To drive our vehicles, you and all of your drivers need to be at least 21 years old and have held a full, valid driving license for at least 1 year at the start of your rental. For the rental of a selection of vehicles, if you have a Mou'v card, you and all of your drivers need to be at least 19 years old and have held a full, valid driving license for at least 1 year at the start of your rental. 

I am under 25 do I need to pay a young driver surcharge?

If you or any of your drivers are under 25 when you pick up the vehicle, you will each have to pay  a young driver surcharge. The cost for is 32,60 EUR per day, for each driver.
If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get cover for the duration of your rental, up to 30 days.

Are there any maximum age restrictions?

No, so long as you hold a full, valid driving license for at least 1 year.


Fuel Policy

Should I bring the vehicle back with a full tank of fuel?
Yes. The vehicle will normally be supplied with a full tank of fuel. You must return it to us with the same amount of fuel it had in it when you picked it up usually a full tank as shown on the factory-installed fuel gauge.  We recommend you fill up as close to the return location as you can on the return date, and keep the receipt to show us. If you don't return the vehicle with a full tank and you can't show us a receipt for fuel we will charge you.
Fuel Options

I plan to travel more than 120kilometres, and want peace of mind, do you have a fuel option for me?
Yes, with Fuel Up Front you pay for a full tank of fuel, based on the manufacturer's stated fuel tank capacity for your vehicle plus our costs of refueling the vehicle for you. Then you just return the vehicle with whatever's left in the tank (even if it's virtually empty) so long as the engine still runs.
How do I calculate the cost of Fuel Up Front?
Depending on where you’re renting, this cost could be up to 0.05 EUR per liter lower than the average fuel price at the start of your rental period as stated on this
EU fuel index:. However, you don't get a refund for any fuel you don't use.
Can I get Fuel up Front at any time?
No, if you want to take advantage of Fuel Up Front, you must ask for it during the booking process or when you pick up the vehicle.
I plan to travel less than 120 kilometers, do I still need to fill up?
Yes, often the fuel gauges stills look "full" so we ask you to fill up the tank near to the return location and show us a copy of the receipt.  If you don't have time to fill up the tank, or can't show us a receipt, we will apply EZ Fuel to cover our costs of refueling the vehicle for you.  
How much is EZ Fuel?
Depending on where you're renting, you pay of fixed fee of between 14.50 EUR and 17.00 EUR.  

What are my options if I don't return the vehicle full and haven't bought Fuel up Front?
Pay on Return will apply if you have driven more than 120 kilometers and:

  • Don't buy Fuel Up Front
  • Don't return the vehicle with a full tank

How do I calculate the cost of Pay on Return?
You pay for fuel based on the factory installed fuel gauge rounded down to the nearest eighth (1/8) of a tank. This is based on the manufacturer's stated fuel tank capacity.
We charge between 1.5 and three times the average fuel price at the end of the rental period for France as stated on this
EU fuel index: plus a service fee between 13 EUR and 15 EUR. The price per liter will be stated on your rental agreement. This charge covers our cost of driving to the nearest petrol station at short notice, and potentially delaying the next customer's rental.

 

Electric Vehicles

How much battery charge should I return an electric vehicle with?

 

You must return the vehicle with at least a 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up.

What am i charged if I fail to return an electric vehicle with the required 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up?

We charge a fixed amount dependent on the battery life showing on the factory-installed battery gauge. This is the Pay on Return rate. the amounts charged are set out below:
